Buhari Told Me: ‘Please Care for Poor Nigerians’ — Peter Obi
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has disclosed that the late former President Muhammadu Buhari once made a heartfelt appeal to him to prioritize the welfare of poor Nigerians.
Speaking on Tuesday during the third-day Islamic prayer (Fidau) in Daura, Katsina State, Obi recalled a brief encounter with Buhari during his 2022 presidential campaign:
“I had the opportunity of meeting him while I was campaigning, and I remember his words till today: ‘Please care for poor Nigerians.’ That’s what I always remember. And I believe that he did his best within his capacity.”
Obi described the exchange as deeply impactful, adding that Buhari’s message of compassion left a lasting impression on him.
Why Obi Missed Buhari’s Burial
The former Anambra governor also explained his absence at Buhari’s burial and earlier prayers, citing flight restrictions as the main challenge.
“It was difficult to come here yesterday because there was no flight. And even if you have a flight, you can’t land in Katsina airport because it was closed for security reasons as dignitaries were arriving,” he said.
He added that mourning does not end with burial:
“Whoever comes the day after tomorrow is still part of the mourning.”
On Buhari’s Legacy
Obi praised Buhari for his simplicity and concern for the less privileged, urging Nigerian leaders to emulate his dedication to the poor.
“Like I said, I am not close to him. I only met him during my campaign. But I remember vividly his sincere appeal for fighting and caring for the poor.”
Vice President Kashim Shettima led the federal government’s delegation to the prayer, delivering President Bola Tinubu’s message describing Buhari’s passing as a “great loss” to the nation.
Other dignitaries present included top government officials, Islamic clerics, former Attorney-General of the Federation, and the Chief of Army Staff.
Though the formal three-day prayer has ended, Islamic scholars will continue extended prayers for another seven days, in line with arrangements by Buhari’s family, Katsina State Government, and the presidency.
