Peter Obi Explains Absence at Buhari’s Burial
Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has clarified the reason behind his absence at the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, stating that logistical challenges prevented him from traveling to Daura on time.
Speaking in Daura, Katsina State, where he paid his respects on Wednesday, Obi expressed his condolences and emphasized that mourning extends beyond the day of burial.

“It was difficult for me to get to Daura yesterday because there was no available flight,” Obi explained. “Anyone who comes even tomorrow is still part of the mourning.”
The late President Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday after a prolonged illness, was buried on Tuesday in his hometown, Daura. The funeral was attended by President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, governors, and several dignitaries.
Obi further detailed his efforts to attend the burial:
“Yesterday morning, after condoling with the family of the late Awujale of Ijebuland in Ogun State, I made every effort to be in Daura for the burial, but logistics beyond my control made it impossible. I sent a message to a member of President Buhari’s family explaining the situation, and he graciously understood. I promised to come today—and I kept that promise.”
He revealed that he was accompanied by Senators Ireti Kingibe, Okey Ezea, and Obidient National Coordinator, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, to pay his respects and console Buhari’s family.
Reflecting on a past encounter with Buhari during his 2022 campaign, Obi recalled the late President’s words:
“Peter, you seem to be everywhere and loved by the people. If you win, do not forget the poor.”
Obi noted that this message has stayed with him, describing Buhari’s concern for the poor as a lesson for all leaders.
“May God grant eternal rest to our late President and the Awujale of Ijebuland, and comfort their families and the nation. Their passing is a deep loss to Nigeria. May their legacies of service and dignity endure,” Obi said.
