Tinubu Agrees to Reinstate Fubara — With One Major Condition

Why Fubara’s Submission raises suspicion

Tinubu Agrees to Reinstate Fubara — With One Major Condition

President Bola Tinubu has approved the reinstatement of suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara — on the condition that he will not seek re-election in 2027, TheCable has learned.

The agreement was reached during a closed-door meeting Thursday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, attended by Fubara; Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike; suspended House Speaker Martin Amaewhule; and several lawmakers.

According to presidency sources, the reinstatement is part of a broader deal aimed at restoring stability in Rivers State but comes with significant concessions from Fubara.

Key among them is Fubara’s commitment to forgo any bid for a second term. In return, he will be allowed to complete his current four-year tenure.

In addition, Wike is to nominate all chairpersons across the state’s 23 local government areas — a strategic concession that effectively restores grassroots political control to the former governor-turned-minister.

Fubara has also agreed to settle all outstanding allowances and entitlements owed to the 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike, who were previously suspended. In return, the lawmakers will shelve plans to initiate impeachment proceedings.

The suspended lawmakers, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), have continued to assert their legislative authority despite legal challenges surrounding their status.

Sources familiar with the talks described the meeting as a breakthrough — but emphasized that the terms heavily favor Wike.

“The arrangement is clear: no second term, no control of local governments, and in exchange, peace returns to the state,” a senior source said.

“Wike emerges stronger from this — maintaining influence over the political structure ahead of 2027.”

The long-running feud between Fubara and Wike has destabilized governance in Rivers State, leading to institutional gridlock, attempts at impeachment, and a deepening rift within the PDP.

In March, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state, suspending the governor, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state assembly for six months. A sole administrator, retired naval chief Ibok-Ette Ibas, was appointed to oversee state affairs.

Fubara’s six-month suspension is expected to end in September.
