Rivers APC Chairman Accuses Governor Fubara of Avoiding Reconciliation, Warns of Impeachment

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha, has accused the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara of showing no commitment to genuine reconciliation efforts with aggrieved lawmakers and other factions in the state.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Okocha criticized Fubara’s handling of the political crisis in the oil-rich state. He referenced President Bola Tinubu’s March declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers, which included the suspension of Governor Fubara and the dissolution of the State House of Assembly.

Following the declaration, President Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state’s interim administrator for a six-month period.

Okocha stated, “There is no reconciliation process underway in Rivers State. Governor Fubara has made no move to engage with lawmakers. Only genuine reconciliation can save him from impeachment, as the Supreme Court has already ruled that there was no functional government in the state.”

When asked about Fubara’s recent visits to President Tinubu and speculation about a possible defection to the APC, Okocha said he was unaware of any such plans. He emphasized that a defection would not absolve Fubara of his political transgressions.

“Governor Fubara’s suspension and the state of emergency were not politically motivated,” Okocha asserted. “They stemmed from his misconduct. He himself admitted that the President’s intervention saved his position. The Supreme Court clearly stated that there was no government functioning in Rivers State, justifying the declaration of a state of emergency.”

Addressing the defection rumors, Okocha added, “Joining the APC will not erase his wrongdoings. If he intends to join our party, he must follow due process—beginning at the ward level. As of today, no ward chairman has reported any move by Fubara to join the APC. He cannot enter through the window; he must come through the front door.”
