President Donald Trump Pays Tribute to Pope Francis Following News of His Passing
As reports emerged of Pope Francis’ death, former President Donald Trump shared a tribute on TruthSocial, expressing his condolences.
The late Pope, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, had previously criticized Trump’s immigration policies during his 2016 presidential term.
Nearly two hours after the Vatican confirmed the pontiff’s passing, Trump issued a statement:
“Rest in Peace, Pope Francis! May God bless him and all who loved him.”
Vice President JD Vance, who met Pope Francis briefly on Easter Sunday, was the first U.S. official to respond to the news. From India, where he is currently on a diplomatic visit with his wife Usha, Vance posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him. I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the homily he gave in the early days of COVID—it was truly beautiful. May God rest his soul
