Federal High Court Backs Fubara, Orders Removal of Tinubu-Appointed Sole Administrator

In a landmark ruling that has reverberated across Nigeria’s political landscape, the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has ruled in favor of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ordering the immediate removal of the Sole Administrator appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The court’s decision, delivered Tuesday morning, gives the Tinubu-backed appointee 48 hours to vacate the Government House, reaffirming Fubara’s constitutional authority as the duly elected governor.

The judgment follows months of escalating tensions between Governor Fubara and his estranged political mentor, former governor and current Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike. The crisis deepened after President Tinubu’s controversial appointment of a Sole Administrator—a move widely criticized by legal experts as unconstitutional and undemocratic.

Presiding judge, Justice Boma Diepriye, declared the appointment “illegal, null, and void,” affirming that the Nigerian Constitution does not permit such an imposition in a state with a sitting, unimpeached governor.

Reacting to the verdict, Governor Fubara hailed it as a “victory for democracy and the rule of law.” Addressing a jubilant crowd outside the courthouse, he stated: “The will of the people has triumphed over political manipulation and executive overreach. I remain committed to serving Rivers State without fear or favor.”

Meanwhile, federal government lawyers are expected to appeal the ruling, suggesting the political standoff is far from over. Analysts see the decision as a major blow to Wike’s political influence and a precedent-setting moment in the ongoing struggle over federal intrusion into state affairs.
