PDP Governors to Challenge Rivers Emergency Rule Declaration in Court
Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have announced plans to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State. The decision follows Tinubu’s Tuesday broadcast, in which he dissolved the state government and appointed an administrator.
In a Zoom meeting, the PDP Governors expressed strong opposition to the move, revealing their intention to pursue legal action. A communiqué signed by Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, emphasized their commitment to constitutional democracy and the rule of law.
“The Forum reviewed the unfortunate proclamation of a State of Emergency in Rivers State and condemned the purported suspension of the Governor, Deputy Governor, and State Assembly members,” the statement read.
The governors have resolved to direct Attorneys General in PDP-controlled states to challenge Section 305 (3) of the Nigerian Constitution and seek judicial interpretation.
They also expressed full support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, urging citizens not to lose hope in the face of what they termed “atrocious intimidation.”
Attendees at the meeting included:
- Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed (Bauchi)
- Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers)
- Seyi Makinde (Oyo)
- Douye Diri (Bayelsa)
- Peter Mbah (Enugu)
- Ademola Adeleke (Osun)
- Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau)
- Agbu Kefas (Taraba)
- Dauda Lawal (Zamfara)
- Monday Onyeme (Deputy Gov., Delta)
