“Group Demands Immediate Appearance of Ibas Before Lawmakers Following Appointment of LG Administrators”

Dr. Hassan Dantani, CDW’s Executive Director, characterized the 23 appointments as “a dangerous abuse of power and a direct attack on the constitution” in a sharply worded statement. The group warned that the move represents an alarming trend of dismantling democratic safeguards under the pretext of emergency rule. The organization highlighted multiple constitutional violations, particularly citing Section 7 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution which mandates elected local governance. Dantani framed the crisis as a national emergency, cautioning that allowing such actions to stand would create a blueprint for future democratic backsliding across Nigeria’s states. CDW called for immediate intervention from both the presidency and legislative leadership, urging the National Assembly to convene emergency hearings. The group demanded Ibas’ appearance before lawmakers to justify what they describe as military-style governance tactics in a democratic system. Their statement concluded with an ultimatum: full reversal of the appointments and restoration of constitutional local governance in Rivers State.

CDW pointed to several constitutional breaches, with specific reference to Section 7 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which guarantees democratically elected local governments. Dantani described the situation as a national emergency, warning that allowing it to stand could set a precedent for democratic erosion across other states.

The organization called for immediate intervention from both the presidency and the National Assembly, urging lawmakers to convene emergency hearings. CDW also demanded that Ibas appear before the legislature to defend what it termed “military-style governance in a democratic system.” The group concluded with a firm ultimatum: reverse the appointments and reinstate constitutional local governance in Rivers State.
