NYESOM WIKE CLARIFIES POSITION ON RECENT PDP CRISIS
…Withdraws from Previous Agreements
…Commits to Pursuing Justice Within the Party
- Since the conclusion of the 2023 general elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been plagued by instability, largely due to dishonesty and a lack of trust among key stakeholders. Several attempts have been made to arrest this destructive trend by promoting adherence to agreements, with the ultimate goal of stabilizing and advancing the party.
- In pursuit of this goal, a meeting of the G5 was held in Lagos. During this meeting, I unequivocally informed the Governor of Oyo State, H.E. Seyi Makinde, that he bore primary responsibility for our current challenges. I emphasized that the party’s troubles stemmed from the consistent disregard for agreements, with Governor Makinde being a key offender. Nevertheless, we resolved during that meeting to move forward in unity.
- A subsequent expanded meeting was held in Abuja, involving H.E. Seyi Makinde, H.E. Umaru Fintiri, H.E. Bala Mohammed, H.E. Bukola Saraki, and myself, at Saraki’s guest house. I made it clear that I had no personal issues with Governor Bala Mohammed but criticized his repeated violations of agreements under the guise of his role as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum. Tensions were high, but we ultimately agreed on several key resolutions:
- Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the National Secretary of the PDP, in line with the Supreme Court’s ruling.
- All legal matters relating to Rivers State must be withdrawn by the National Legal Adviser.
- The lawsuit proposing a state of emergency must be withdrawn immediately.
- All stakeholders must honor these agreements without deviation.
Following these resolutions, I was urged to attend a stakeholders’ meeting at the Bauchi Government Lodge, which I did despite prior engagements. There, I reiterated my concerns, and a reconciliation committee chaired by H.E. Bukola Saraki was established to address all lingering issues.
- Regrettably, even before the Saraki-led committee commenced its work, the gentleman’s agreement reached at Saraki’s residence was already being undermined. I was dismayed to learn that Governor Seyi Makinde, in collusion with Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, organized a meeting of South-East PDP leaders, during which they resolved to pull out of the party unless Ude Okoye was adopted as National Secretary—an unacceptable position. I publicly rejected that resolution.
Governor Makinde further instigated actions at the PDP National Secretariat to install the Deputy National Secretary as Acting National Secretary—an outright violation of our agreement. A letter from the Deputy National Secretary calling for a NEC meeting and another letter contesting the validity of the Anambra governorship nomination, despite being properly signed by Senator Anyanwu and the Acting National Chairman, illustrate this disregard for party rules and unity.
On May 24, 2025, in Jos, a properly convened zonal elective congress was aborted when INEC declined participation due to the improper signing of the invitation letter by the Deputy National Secretary instead of Senator Anyanwu. This episode was provocative, illegal, and deeply disappointing.
- I have laid out these facts to ensure PDP members and the public understand the situation clearly. I have been a committed member of this party since 1998, and my contributions to its survival and growth are well documented. It is particularly painful that despite my support for many of these governors—without ever demanding personal favors—they have chosen to betray our shared trust.
Given the persistent acts of bad faith, particularly the subversion of agreements and democratic processes, I have resolved to withdraw from all previously reached agreements. I will continue to fight for truth, justice, and the integrity of our party.
