Akpoti-Uduaghan Remains Committed to Due Process – Legal Team
The legal representatives of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan have reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to due process and the rule of law, urging law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies to act with fairness, objectivity, and impartiality in all matters involving the Kogi Central senator.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Queens Law Cradle, a firm of legal practitioners and consultants, the team expressed concern over the refusal of law enforcement agencies to investigate multiple petitions filed by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, many of which implicate influential figures and raise urgent safety concerns.
“Justice must be impartial,” the statement read. “The continued failure to act on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petitions undermines public trust in due process. The public expects law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies to uphold justice without fear or favor.”
The legal team criticized what they described as selective enforcement, noting that while Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petitions remain unaddressed, counter-petitions filed by Senator Godswill Akpabio and former Governor Yahaya Bello—both of whom were named in her initial complaints—were swiftly acted upon, resulting in a criminal charge against her.
“This disparity is troubling. It raises serious concerns about the integrity and neutrality of enforcement actions,” the statement added.
Although Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is currently outside the country on personal engagements, her legal team confirmed she is fully committed to facing the legal process. “We have received formal notification regarding the charges and can confirm that she will make herself available once an arraignment date is set,” the statement affirmed.
Between March 11 and May 19, 2025, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan submitted twelve formal petitions to the Nigeria Police Force and other authorities. These petitions outlined threats to her personal safety, defamatory attacks, and various unlawful actions. However, no substantive responses have been received, and none of her witnesses have been invited for statements or further inquiry.
Details of the petitions include:
- March 11, 2025 – Petition to the IGP over cyberstalking, hate speech, and discriminatory conduct by Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi.
- March 25, 2025 – Personal petition highlighting security threats linked to Senator Godswill Akpabio.
- March 31, 2025 – Petition concerning the withdrawal of police security and resulting safety risks.
- April 4, 2025 – Report exposing an alleged assassination plot involving Senator Akpabio and former Governor Bello.
- April 24, 2025 – Request for status updates, citing abduction and security threats.
- April 28, 2025 – Petition on abduction and attempted assassination of her protocol officer, Hon. Jude Sule.
- April 29, 2025 – Internal police communication requesting investigation by DCP Monitoring Unit.
- May 2, 2025 – Petition on cyberstalking and defamation by Senator Nwebonyi.
- May 6, 2025 – Petition on cyberbullying and misrepresentation by Dr. Sandra Duru.
- May 15, 2025 – Petition alleging conspiracy and defamation by Senator Akpabio and Dr. Duru.
- May 19, 2025 – Petition to the Attorney-General regarding police inaction.
- May 19, 2025 – Supplementary petition to the IGP over continued non-investigation of key cases.
The legal team also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian public for speaking out against what it called a “curious” criminal charge filed by the Federal Government.
“We are heartened by the public’s response in condemning this development. Rather than pursuing justice, the government has chosen to prosecute our client without first addressing her legitimate concerns,” the statement read.
“Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan remains confident that the truth will prevail, and injustice will not stand,” the legal team concluded.
