EFCC Denies Arrest of VeryDarkMan, Labels BBC Report False
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied claims that it arrested popular social media activist and rights advocate, Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
In a statement posted on the social media platform X on Monday, the EFCC dismissed a report by BBC News Pidgin as false. The commission described the news as misleading and untrue.
Earlier, BBC News Pidgin had published a report alleging that EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed VeryDarkMan’s arrest, quoting him as saying,
“We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners.”
The report further claimed that Oyewale clarified the arrest was not related to issues with any specific bank but was based on complaints from multiple individuals.
According to circulating reports, Otse was allegedly taken into custody on Thursday, May 2, 2025, shortly after visiting a GTBank branch in Area 3, Garki, Abuja. He was reportedly at the bank with his mother and a friend to resolve complaints regarding unauthorised deductions from his mother’s account when the arrest occurred.
