Veteran comedian and actor, Okechukwu Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, has been appointed as the traditional ruler of the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Ahiara-Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.
Upon his coronation, he will officially bear the title His Royal Highness Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, OKWE II of Umuihuocha Obohia, succeeding a predecessor believed to have held the title OKWE I. Although details about the former ruler remain limited, the “II” in his new title confirms a lineage of rulership.
The Umuihuocha Autonomous Community is a recognized entity within Mbaise, known for its strong cultural heritage and leadership traditions.
Okey Bakassi, 55, becomes the only Nigerian entertainer in recent times to ascend to a traditional leadership role. Beyond his successful entertainment career, he also served as Senior Special Adviser on Entertainment Matters to former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim.
Announcing the development on his social media with the tag “NEXT LEVEL”, the comedian expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him, stating that the new role represents “Service to Community” and a greater calling to serve humanity. He also thanked the people of Umuihuocha for their belief in him.
Celebrations and Felicitations
Since the announcement, congratulatory messages have poured in from across the country. Fellow comedian Gbenga Adeyinka wrote:
“Congratulations on your new elevation by the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community! This is a remarkable achievement. I pray for your success and wisdom as you lead your people. Kudos to your community for choosing such a distinguished gentleman.”
Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), also joined in the celebration, referring to him as “Ichie Na Umuihuocha”—a title of high esteem in Igbo culture.
Other Celebrities with Traditional Titles
Okey Bakassi now joins a growing list of Nigerian celebrities who have received traditional honors. Notably, singer D’Banj was conferred the title “Enyi Ka Nwanne Amuzi” in Amuzi Obowoland of Imo State in January 2018. In the same year, actor Femi Branch was also honored with a chieftaincy title, “Agun Asa.”
Okey Bakassi’s new role represents a blending of modern influence and traditional leadership, marking a new chapter in his already distinguished career
