Why My Husband Apologize in Court

Uchechi Kanu, wife of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) currently on trial for terrorism, has explained why her husband apologized in Justice Binta Nyako’s court.

In a statement, she clarified that the apology was necessary following the appointment of renowned senior lawyer Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, as Kanu’s lead counsel. She emphasized that Agabi’s stature—having served twice as Attorney-General, twice as Minister of Justice, and as a former Senator—made it essential to mend relations within the judiciary.

“My husband, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, acknowledged the need for Chief Kanu Agabi to address the court regarding past events in Justice Binta Nyako’s courtroom, which significantly impacted the Nigerian judiciary,” the statement read. Chief Agabi’s role was to ease tensions arising from Kanu’s previous outbursts, which led to Nyako’s recusal. His intervention was aimed at restoring decorum and ensuring a smoother legal process.

Interestingly, Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the matter, also apologized to Kanu for the prolonged delays and mishandling of his trial, recognizing the difficulties he has faced within the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Uchechi Kanu urged the public to read the full statement before drawing conclusions, highlighting that Chief Agabi’s approach was rooted in fostering dialogue and peaceful resolution.
