President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to the ongoing political crisis and governance paralysis. As part of this measure, Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly members have been suspended for six months.
In a nationwide address on Tuesday, Tinubu expressed deep concern over the situation, stating:
“The prolonged political crisis in Rivers has crippled governance, leaving the people without effective leadership. Fourteen months after Governor Fubara demolished the House of Assembly, it remains unbuilt despite multiple interventions, including mine. No responsible President can stand by without taking action.”
To restore order, Tinubu announced the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as the state’s Administrator.
The declaration follows rising tensions in Rivers, including an explosion at an oil facility in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area and a fire outbreak at the Trans-Niger Pipeline, operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), earlier in the day.
